The Fabulous Popping Nacho

16/10/2020 by Alison Asher 2 Comments

Yesterday I had an afternoon where lots of things were time dependant. I don’t like time to rule me- I prefer to let it roll along close by me, sometimes leading, sometimes following and sometimes, in those sweet moments of flow we even hold hands, time and I. Yesterday time was boss.

I had to pick up some cool presents for our Chicks Who Click private coaching group, then bust into the corona-free zone of the school to get Coco’s case left over from camp (yes, the two day old poo-water marinating in the Queensland sun smelt DIVINE for those of you following along), then be back to get the kids to work and singing lessons. Time-frames. And none of them mine. Which doesn’t sound like much, until I decided to believe the voice in my car “Do a u-turn and return to the route” instead of the voice in my head saying, “I don’t think that’s right.”

It wasn’t.

So I ended up sitting near Gibsons (which is the other side of town if you aren’t from Newsa), blinking like a mogwai, and wondering why on earth I didn’t listen to my brain instead of Siri. When you organise yourself to the nth degree, any deviation can throw the whole space-time-continuum thingy awry, and the earth shifts on its axis. Or perhaps I’m being a little dramatic. Blogging can do that to a person you know.

So I did what any self respecting loon would do: I breathed out, I smiled, and then I described (out loud) how the next hour would play out. How I would do all.of.the.things with ease and grace. Which of course made me laugh, as grace isn’t really my thang. (Have I ever told you about my “grace”-or fall from- on the escalator in Paris? Comment below if you must know more.)

The dude hosing the path out front of Gibsons gave me a smile- as you do when you encounter an unhinged Mum in a pretend 4WD near school pickup time- which I interpreted as him thinking, “Wow, she’s hot for an old bird, and I do like ’em with a bit of cray-cray.” Winky emoji. (Or maybe it’s the eggplant?)

Back to the narrative:

Guess what?

I got it all done. In fact, I got it done with time to spare. Time and I were mates again. Sorry for being mean, forgive me Time?

Which leads me to the point, and the thing that Coco and I were discussing this morning. Sometimes we think we can’t. Maybe we think we can’t get it all done. Or we can’t take the leap. Or we don’t have the skills. Or maybe we think we are too small, too weak, too dumb, too lazy, too incapable. But the funny thing is, when we set our intentions clearly, when we profess what we want, when we put in our specific order (I’ll have the steak medium-rare and put the gravy on the side please) and make sure it is received, then we can do more than we think we are capable of.

We aren’t incapable. We are IN CAPE ABLE.

We can all be super heroes in our own lives. In capes (obvs).

My cape says ‘The Fabulous Popping Nacho,” Liam’s says, “The Mighty Lightening Bolt,” and Coco’s says, “The Amazing Little Bee”. (Yes, we all have our talents, and yes, if I could choose again I’d now be The Chick of Truth, but sometimes you have to work with what you’ve been given, don’t you?). Point being: we all have capes. It’s just that sometimes they get chucked to the back of the cupboard with all the unmatched socks and the now dusty Apple box with the receipts from last Christmas. And we forget we have them.

Here’s some homework: Dust off your cape. (You’re more than able.)

Bet Liam would have liked his cape this day…

It’s been a great week on the Sunshine Coast.  I can’t tell you too much right now, due to possible future blog fodder (I can’t use all my ideas at once you know), but The Canadians have been here, and we have done all things touristy.

So here’s the HITS:

1.  THE WHOLE SUNSHINE COAST.  We have been from Nambour to Noosa, Maleny to Maroochydore, Bli Bli to Boreen Point, and all the ridiculously named places in between, and every place has it’s own charm and point of difference.  Imma feeling pretty blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the world, and I’m so pleased The Canadians came and went, to help me see the place through tourist eyes all over again. This joint is bloody beautiful.  You should visit.

2.  Valentine’s Day Dinner.  I’m a definite non-romantic on the day (a bit of: don’t you tell ME what to do, calendar), but this VDay we decided to have a little celebration in our ‘party arena’ with the neighbours… Plus it was fun to force some romance on Twin Two and his bride.  We may have had some wine, just to toast St.Val of course… we’re not lushes you know.

VDay table

I got my BabyMac on and made some watermelon loves

3.  Sisters-In-Law.  I have two now, and both times, within seven minutes of meeting them, I felt like I had known them forever. It eases my heart to see my brothers with such gorgeous, whip-smart, funny chicks, who fit right in to our little niche.  Smart guys, my brothers.

4.  Some fun news for the blog…. I can’t say much -because who knows what crazy ideas these kids are gonna come back with-  but I can say I am VERY EXCITED at what may happen over here in my little part of the Interwebz, in this Year of the Horse (I’m told it’s all about fast moving energy and quick decisions, and less about having a long face)… Anyway, you might, if you’re all well behaved, get a chance to read more about the behind the scenes stuff here in Asherland.   Maybe.

5.  Friends.  Just friends.

I’ve got some rippers.  Some of them are far away in Mextoria, but somehow they know just when I need a pep up.  Some are next door and open their house and their generous hearts to my visitors.  Some are people I haven’t met IRL, (weirdly), I met them on here, or Twitter, and yet I feel like they know me and I them.  Some are gallivanting around Australia, but still care about what’s happening in this little part of The Shire, and some ARE COMING TO VISIT NEXT MONTH, and then I’ll see them in Sydders just after that.

Cheers to friends.

Happy Weekened RRs

What are your hits?

Do you C what I C?

30/10/2013 by Alison Asher 2 Comments

Tuesdays are pretty “Meh” around here.  Monday is a big work day, and frankly, I’m physically tired after working my fingers down to the proximal interphalangeal joints stumps until 8pm, and beyond. The desire some of my gorgeous people have for optimum performance is relentless.  And invigorating.

However, as I have revealed previously, I am, by nature, a sloth.  I live in my head, and in my house, preferably without leaving either one too often.  Case in point: I once went eight days and nights without leaving “the compound”.  Working from home, and shopping online allows hermits like me to seem almost normal.  Almost.  Before you freak out and think Nath has me locked up under the stairs (cos Lord knows I do require reining in from time to time, as Mr Boags well knows), the compound does include going out the back gate and over to the beach.  It’s part of my property after all.  My beach.  My sand.  My lifeguard (oh yessiree Bob).

So Tuesday.  Meh.  Housework.  Jobs.  Reading groups at school.  Thinking about how not to exercise, or feeling guilty about not doing it.  You know, all the things that have to happen every week, no matter how well you did them last week, and will still need to be done again next week, not matter how well you did them this week.  And the week after.  Sometimes the banal rituals of life just get to me.

I try to remind myself to be grateful.  To remember how lucky I am to live here.  To have this beach at my doorstep.  To have this view.  To have this wide open sky.  To have the warmth of the sun on my back.  To be alive and healthy and happy and loved.  But Tuesdays.

Today gorgeous Lani invited me to have coffee with her, and she chose Bistro C .  I love Bistro C.  I love the noise and the view and the fun, fast and cheeky service.  I love the food that never skips a beat, and the music that lifts my mood, and the view.  I may have mentioned that view.

Easy on the eye

Laguna Bay. Easy on the eye, she is.

Still, I was Tuesday grumpy about Hastings Street today.  The Tri is on this weekend, and that bloody Seahaven reno is still going on, and so I knew parking would be scarce and tossers would be everywhere. I muttered and mumbled myself into a parking space right out front, and then grumbled and griped right up to the front door.

And then it happened.  Noosa magic.

The blue-eyed guy greeted me with a grin and said, “Sure, sit wherever you like”.  Then coffee came with smiles and speed.  Water came often, and without fuss.  The sun warmed my skin.  The breeze fluttered along my forearms and tickled my nape, and those Tuesday Bluesdays just flittered off.  I looked out at that big blue bay and remembered all the times I’ve sat here, in this spot, and marvelled at the luck and cunning that landed me here on this squeaky white sand.  Once a tourist, and now here planted.

Coffee and muffins and Lani arrived and we sat and we talked and laughed and solved the problems of the world, or at least of our own minds, and together Laguna Bay and that Bistro Sea just acted like a salve to my fragmented soul.  Sure, I still have the boring to do.  And the things that ail my mind are still there, worrying away and burying deep, but seeing this place through the eyes of a tourist lightened me.

Bistro See.

Opens your eyes it does.

So now I'm a food blogger...

So now I’m another bloody food blogger…

Do you have a Bistro C?

What day is your Bluesday?

**This is not a sponsored post.  I paid for my own damn coffee and muffin. 7 bucks. Get onto it.

Hitwave Alison, vol 1

Welcome to Hitwave Alison, my Top 5 for the week.

1.  Bistro C on Hastings Street.  The 9year old chose it for his birthday breakfast, because “It’s the best restaurant in the world Mum.”  It’s also the best location, sitting right on Noosa Beach.  So close you almost have sand between your toes.  Fab food and Fab views.  And cheeky waiters apologising for the view.  This view:

The view from Bistro C… Hard to beat

The view from Bistro C… Hard to beat. The waiters are dickheads

2.  These shoes, from Country Road.  I just love a summery sandal.  Things are hotting up around these parts, but the legs aren’t ready to be out in public just yet, so these sandals are just the thing.

Don't look at the legs

Don’t look at the legs

3.  The weather this week.  Soooo good here these last few days.  I feel so lucky to live in such an amazing place, with such perfect Spring days.  We even had dolphins hanging around Main Beach this morning.  (In the water- not sitting at Sails or something.)

4.  All the kids in Liam’s class singing Happy Birthday to him.  Still so cute.  And how they then descended on me and my Zooper Dooper supply in lieu of cupcakes  (I canNOT bake cupcakes). Luckily I had scissors to fend them off.

5.  My Mum for buying a big box of Cadbury Favourites for The Kid as part of The Festival of Liam.  I’ve been siphoning those babies off nightly.  He has no clue.  I love being the boss of the house.  I don’t care if you think I’m a bogan Hayley, I bloody love ’em.

Have a great weekend y’all

What’s your Top 5?
